Good Morning Hockey Fans...
Round 3 has begun.. Tonight's Flyers-Pens game should set the tone for this round cause lets be honest, last night was a dud. Clearly the Stars didn't have it - that first period was just sad. 4 shots on goal in the 1st period?? Cmon!! But in their defense, they did just play 7 periods of playoff elimination hockey a few nights ago. I thought 3 days rest would be enough to recharge the batteries - clearly it wasn't.
Philly losing Timonen is a big blow but it's playoff time - you're supposed to show your depth & have guys step up. Will RJ Umbringer keep up his hot hand? He's a Pittsburgh native, loves playing there & is coming off a 2nd round series where he had 8 goals. I've a feeling this will be the most exciting series of the playoffs so far & I'm expecting the fireworks to start early tonight. Division rivals, bad blood, you name it.. Love the Flyer faithful's nickname for Crosby.. Only in Philly would one the leagues premier players be known as Hatey-Seven.
I wanted to correct something I mentioned before - I said if Pittsburgh swept the Rangers it would've been the first time a team started the playoffs 8-0. I was wrong. Edmonton went 9-0 in 1985.
Sorry guys I gotta vent about this. The Toronto sports media drives me crazy. Brian Burke this, Brian Burke that.. Shut the hell up already & give it a rest fella's. I'm sick of hearing about it. If I were one of the suits @ MLSE I'd have a sit down with Doug Armstrong ASAP & get his John Hancock on a contract. There's a ton of work to do in LeafLand & the longer they're twiddling their thumbs the worse off they'll be.
Also - so you all know, I'm in Vegas next week with work from Tuesday till Saturday. There will be no updates while I'm gone. Yeah - it sucks I know. :)
Those of you that are interested here is a breakdown of the remaining players & the number of times they've been selected.

Welcome to the conference finals.
Can't say many any of us predicted this final four. Pittsburgh & Detroit were all picked very heavily by everyone. Most entries have one or the other. But in Philly & Dallas' case there are only 2 entries with selections from both of the teams.
What an OT marathon last night.. I tried to watch but just couldn't do it.. 9PM start + 4 OT's.. Wow.
Collectively we all got stomped this weekend. Montreal, San Jose & the Rangers all getting bounced saw over 420 player selections eliminated. That's a little over 1/3 of the total selections.
Our 2nd round leader was yours truely once again with 187 points. Things are only getting tougher from here. Not having the big guns from Detroit in Datsuk & Zetterberg is really gonna hurt me.
Conference Finals Start Thursday night for the west in Detroit. In the East action begins on Friday. Philly-Pittsburgh should be awesome.. I can't wait to watch that one.
I'm predicting Pittsburgh in 6 and Dallas in 7 for a Pit-Dal '08 Cup final.
See you guys on Friday. Talk soon.

Happy Friday folks!
Looks like I picked the wrong night not to watch hockey. I figured with two series up 3-0 I wasn't going to miss much. Boy was I wrong. Rangers/Pittsburgh finally got some bad blood going. Who would've thought that would happen after Avery was out of the playoffs?
Jagr got rocked, Hossa got rocked. Crosby & Malkin both going off for roughing penalties @ the same time.. Huh? What was that?? I wouldn't beleive it unless I saw the highlights. Crosby & Malkin both went off for roughing penalties @ the same time in the 3rd.. And what's with Malkin taking guys out? Didn't see the game but... WTF?!? I can't understate King Henrik's first shutout this postseason either, if the rangers are going to make some more noise they'll certainly need more of that. Is it too little too late? We'll see. I'll definitely be watching the next game.
Holy Mule man Johan.. Franzen is just nuts... Dude scored his 2nd hat trick of the series & has 9 goals in the series. WOW! He set a franchise record in this series - and Detroit has a rich NHL history. Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Alex, Delvecchio, Ted Lindsay.. That's some serious company. In Colorado's defense, they were completely overmatched. Too many injuries + shite goaltending = Buh bye. If Forsberg, Smyth, Wolski, Hannah and Stastny were all healthy this series wouldn't be over just yet.
Zetterberg had a beauty last night. Check it out. Goal of the playoffs? So far yes. Goal of the year? Nah - I still think Rick Nash's goal on Phoenix tops Zetterberg's from last night. Can't remember? Click here to see Nash make both dmen & the goalie look like practice pylons.
18 entries lost a total of 51 players with Colorado. Our 4 teams without a player eliminated are unaffected by Colorado's ousting but I doubt that'll hold up once this round is complete.
Only game tonight has the Sharks back home trying to avoid elimination against the Stars. I know I'm hoping Dallas does the same as Detroit did last night. :)
Standings are updated. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

P.S. This is non hockey related but I have to share. If you're ever having a bad day, think of this poor guy.. How would you handle being stuck in an elevator for 41 hours?

Morning everyone..
How about a big stinking pitcher of ice cold water down your back.. That's what it feels like after last night. Pittsburgh, Dallas & Detroit all with 3-0 series leads. If you think any of the 3 teams can come back from 3-0 I've a bunch of enron stock to sell you. Not really, but you get the picture.. The fat lady's warming up. At least we have the Habs-Philly series to keep us entertained.
How's this for an eye opener.. Pittsburgh has the chance to be the first team ever to start the playoffs 8-0. Heady stuff for such a young team. I'm just wondering now if Philly or Montreal can even skate with them. I remember thinking to myself early this season that the Flyers having a good young team & could be the anti-penguins eventually.. Pens with their run & gun high octane and Philly with the more physical in your face type team. I never thought Philly would gel this soon. To go from the worst team in the league last year to now.. Now that's impressive.
Until I was reminded of it, I forgot about Forsberg missing the entire season a couple years back & then leading all playoff scorers.. But this isn't the same Forsberg. He just looks off out there. Hate to say it but it may be the last hurrah for Peter the Great.
Anyone else out there think San Jose has played Nabakov too much? He has the worst save percentage of any goalie still in the playoffs. Maybe playing 77 out of 82 games during the season wasn't such a good idea afterall..
I've been rough on Philly, and some of you have been letting me know it.. It wouldn't be right for me to let it pass without mentioning Laperierre's check from behind last night.. If hatcher got 5 & a game for his hit, Laperierre definitely deserved the same. Not even 2 minutes for boarding - WTF?!? AND I swear I saw Zetterberg slew foot one of the Colorado D.. Didn't hear any mention of it by the commentators though. Hmmmm.
George Laraque scored a playoff goal?!? Say what?!?
2 games on tonight.. Mon-Phi & SJ-Dal I think shark season may over.
Standings are updated.
Enjoy tonights games everyone!

Morning everyone,
Interesting game last night.. To those of you that thought I was out of line calling Philly a dirty team yesterday still think I'm wrong? If Downie slew footing Price & Hatcher running Boullion from behind doesn't prove that nothing will.
I think Carey Price will be fine next game. You gotta learn how to win in the playoffs & though the Habs lost last night I think this series is far from over. Montreal didn't do themselves any favor's last night blowing a full 2 minute 5 on 3 in the first. Biron played outstanding last night too & got lucky with a couple posts in the first period. Anyone see the clip on HNIC last night of him as boy with a bunch of old Quebec Nordiques? Very cool stuff there.. He's living the dream, playing playoff hockey against his childhood idol's biggest rival.
What was that blue thing Umbringer was huffing on while on the bench last night?
Have I mentioned I hate how the playoff schedule is messed up. 1 game last night, 3 tonight with Dallas-San Jose playing back to back tonight & tomorrow.
Will we see more of this?
The Toronto Marlies won their 1st round AHL playoff series last night.. Round 2 starts @ Ricoh Friday night. Does anyone in this city care? 1500 fans @ the playoff opener was pathetic.

Hey hockey fans..
Some more great hockey on the weekend.. Didn't get to see as much as I would've liked to (do I ever?) but managed to catch bit's & pieces of most games.
Is it just me or are blown leads the way the 2nd round is going? Rangers up 3-0 in game one then lose. Philly blowing the lead late in game one.. San Jose ahead last right before Dallas scores 4 unanswered in the 3rd last night. Brad Richards had a monster game last night with 4 points.
First Ryan Clowe in round 1 as the scoring surprise now Johan Franzen in Detroit in round 2 - where did this guy come from? He's has been on fire. He has something ridiculous like 22 goals in his last 24 games with 10 being game winners.. Not sure on the exact breakdown buts its very similar. And to think only 2 guys picked him.. Way to go guys.
Speaking of Detroit - looks like they've pretty much had their way with Colorado so far. Bet Colorado can't wait to play at home.. It's must win time for them. Going down 3-0 to the Wings is playoff suicide.
Pittsburgh's looking scary - comeback in game 1 then holding the Rangers scoreless in game 2 is quite a feat. Are the kids grown up?
Montreal - Philly is the only series playing tonight. Should be a good game. And I have to agree with Carbo. Philly's the dirtiest team in the league & they wanna complain about a facewash.. Get over it. Think we'll see Carbo's lucky tie again tonight?
Enjoy tonights game everyone.

Hey hockey fans..
Late update today - apologies for that.. Big win by the Habs last night and a tough one to swallow for Philly.. 30 seconds from a huge upset in game 1 only to lose less than a minute into OT.. I dunno if you'd call it Montreal coming through or Philly choking.
Didn't see any of the Colorado-Detroit game.. But it was interesting that Detroit chased Theodore after he had a stellar performance in round 1. Franzen though had a big night with 3 points.
The other 2 series get underway tonight. Personally I can't wait to watch the Pens-Rangers. Should be a dandy.
I've cash from most of you now.. Thanks to all that have paid up.. The rest of you please contact me ASAP to make arrangements for the overdue pool fee.
Talk soon & enjoy the games!

Hey everyone..
1st round is now officially over & round two starts tomorrow night.. Some great showings and a lot of surprises.. Boston really showed fight when no one expected anything.. My fellow newf Ryan Clowe, is in the scoring leaders. Yes b'ye!!
Gotta say I was choked how the Washington game ended.. A penalty call in OT on that? And that goal by Kapanen.. Huet got bowled over & in my opinion that goal shouldn't have counted.. But no sense crying over spilt milk.. Washington's booking tee times while Philly plays in Montreal tomorrow night. Would've loved to have seen Huet play against the Canadiens but that wasn't meant to be.
Tried my damnedest last night to stay awake during the Sj-Cal game & saw the awesome tip in goal by Iginla - what an awesome play that was.. But after that I was counting sheep & frantically changing channels @ 2am to see who won.. How about Jeremy Roenick turning back the clock. What a game.. 4 points.. Brilliant move by Ron Wilson.
Anyone think Huselius is crying over the Flames losing? Dude just won a million bucks betting on ponies. I don't care what anyone says - that has to be distracting!
Just about all of us have suffered a loss so far with the exception of the following four teams - Tommy Ferrari, Peter Hicks, The System & Patrick O'Conner. Have to keep an eye on these four as they've more players remaining than anyone else.
I'm happy to announce that I'm the leader after the first round.. I can say that this is the first time I've finished first at any point in this playoff pool since I started running it a few years ago. I'll take it. Good luck in round 2 everyone.
Standings are updated.
Thanks,
Patrick

Carey Price.. Congrats on your first series win. No one can dog you now. You were there when it mattered. Not to mention you lead the league in playoff shutouts so far.
Monster win in Philly last night for Washington. Sets up what should be an awesome game 7 tonight. I think I can watch one-timer highlights all night.. You see Ovechkin rip the twine last night? I love the fact he's not a prototypical euro player.. He got rocked last night by Richards.. All he did was bounce back to score the game winner & the insurance goal.
The other big game is on CBC @ 10 tonight. Calgary's already won twice @ the shark tank & it's the first ever Game 7 San Jose has hosted. Break out the popcorn.. Should be bodies flying all over the ice tonight. See Regher rock Thornton in the opening minutes in game 6? Beauty!!
Unsure when Round 2 starts but my guess is Thursday night. Match ups look to be Montreal vs. Caps/Flyers winner & Rangers vs. Pens in the east. If Calgary wins tonight, they'll face Detroit with Colorado playing Dallas. If San Jose wins, they play Dallas & we get another taste of Detroit-Colorado which would be awesome. If that happens, how many times you think we'll see the Claude Lemieux hit on Draper & the fallout of that hit? Playoff hockey.. I love it!!
Standings are updated.

We're going have a new champ this year.. Anaheim getting bounced has major implications on the pool. There were 138 picks eliminated with Anaheim, Minnesota & Nashville. The majority of which were Ducks.
Should be an awesome game 7 tonight in Montreal.. Anyone out there honestly think the Bruins would take the series this far? If Boston does pull off the feat - can Carey Price recover or will the Montreal fans let him?
Washington again tries to avoid Elimination & force their own game 7.. Gonna be a workout night for the thumb & the remote.
Is Hasek riding the pine in round 2? Osgood deserves the shot to start the next round.. Other than letting in a goal with 7 seconds left in game 5, Ozzie would be looking @ back to back shutouts.
I'm attaching the spreadsheet today as I don't have the time to update the site with eliminated players - I will do that later this evening.
Standings are below. Enjoy the games tonight everyone.. I know I will!
Gotta love seeing Cam Neely jumping around & acting like a little kid. C-Bass rules! Go Bruins!

Happy Saturday!
Great weather today & great playoff hockey.. Could we ask for anything more?
Needed to do some housekeeping on the stats this morning. There were 5 additional entries that I hadn't had time to add to the master listing until this morning. To those that are wondering about their legitimacy, I can assure you that these entries were submitted prior to the deadline. I've been referring to 60 entries where as the standings only listed 56. The standings are now include all 61 entries.
To those of you that have already submitted their payments, thanks! The rest of you, please email me an email transfer of drop a check in the mail & send it to me @ #205, 1286 Islington Ave, Toronto, ON M9A 3K1.
Short update today - busy Saturday.. Jersey got bounced last night. Anyone care to take the over-under on how many more years Brodeur's gonna play.. Reading his statements in the paper about how much the league has changed makes me think he'll be hanging it up sooner than later.
Nashville sure isn't making it easy on Detroit.. Taking them to OT with a depleted lineup.
3 more games today. Boston, Washington try to avoid being bounced on home ice while Minnesota needs to pull the feat on the road.

Morning everyone,
It's getting crowded @ the top.. 10 points separate the top 19 entries. I've added more new columns to the standings below.. In addition to listing how many players you have remaining the 3rd & fourth columns indicate how many points in the last update and the 4th the points gained from the night before (or previous update).
Was to the Jays game last night so I didn't see any hockey.. What I found funny was that the camera men next to the jays dugout had a TV set up & were watching the Bruins/Habs game. Only in Canada. :)
Speaking of the Habs/Bruins, turns out Carey Price is human afterall.. Bruins had a big game.. Anyone care to explain why Phil Kessel had been a scratch up till now? They need offense & the kid can score..
Caught the 2nd overtime of the Caps/Flyers - just in time to see the Flyers net OT winner.. Looks like we all underestimated those Flyers.. Can Ovie & company overcome 3-1? It'll be interesting to see.
Rangers and Dallas have a chance to close out their series tonight.. I'm rooting for the stars..
If you've been to a Jays game you'll probably recognize this guy.. He always cracks me up.. Dollar in the bucket.. Thank you!!

Mornin all!
We have our first casualties of these playoffs.. Kinda suprised that Ottawa got put away so easily.. Are the Pens that good are did the Sens just implode? I think it's the latter but let's see how far Pittsburgh goes before we pass judgement.
There were 20 picks eliminated amongst 8 different entries.. Team Boobie & Hip had their head counts slashed significantly. Will Boobie defend his cellar dweller title? In his defense, he asked me to pick his team & if he won anything then proceeds will go to charity. Rolling the dice on the Sens was a no-go.
How about Nashville? Is Detroit thinking "Here we go again" or will returning to Joe Louis cure what ails them? Other than the rationale being Tootoo has a funny sounding name - did Jenny-Cakes know something the rest of us didn't by being the only person to take a Predator?
5 more games tonight.. Montreal's back home looking to wrap up the series. The Bruins are dishing out punishment but the big question is can they beat the man-child Carey Price?
Enjoy the games eveyone. Hope you like the video clip's I've been sending out. If you've a suggestion or something to share, email me the link at hockeypool@patrickdunphy.net.

Hey Everyone.
Didn't see much hockey last night.. Was getting ready to watch the Calgary-San Jose game but was KO'd on the couch very shortly. Don't even recall the puck drop. I did see the boxscore though.. 10 shots on net for the Flames? Not going to get very far like that.. Didn't see any highlights but Kiprusoff must've been pretty damn sharp to keep em in the game. Though I didn't pick em gotta love Ryan Clowe - good Newfie having a monster playoffs so far.. To the 2 people that picked him - awesome job!
Why is it every year in the first round a hometeam seems to lose the first 2 at home then goes onto win the series? For my sake I hope it's not Anaheim's turn to pull it off this year.
Looked like a rough one in Colorado last night. Seven 10 minute misconduct's.. Think all the overtime games are getting to these guys or what?? Paul Stastny - where are you??
I did catch the sequence with Huet & Briere last night. tsk tsk.. Can't say I like Briere very much. Complaining about the fans booing him during his regular season slump.. You better believe the philly fans will hold you accountable.. Dude - you signed a monster contact so you gotta produce.. No excuses. In his defence he's having a great playoff so far.
Price with his first postseason shutout.. The legend grows..
To those of you that have already contacted me about payment, thank you very much. I'm accepting payment online & by old fashioned snail mail.. If you bank online, you can send me email transfer interact or mail to my home.

So I get home last night during the 2nd intermission and see the Sens-Pens tied @ 2 and hear that Alfreddson is back in the lineup. I thought I had a 3rd period to watch. Nope. Not to be. Ottawa shits the bed & 90 seconds into the 3rd they're down 3-1.. There goes that series.
That senator dude with the braveheart speech in the pregame. What the hell was that?
Crazy comeback in Nashville too.. 2 goals in 9 seconds & they win over Detroit.. Crazy.. Arnott definately got his bell rang in the celebration.. That made me laugh.. Yes - I sometimes laugh at others misforture. Oh I saw the highlight of Fleury grabbing Heatley's skate.. That made me laugh too..
Busy night tonight.. I just looked up who was playing & thought for the 1000th time that I really miss the old format.. Wales one night, Campbell the next. Hell I'd settle for east one night & and west the next. There's 5 games tonight, Thursday & Saturday.. Tough to know who's playing without looking it up. That's messed up..
Not gonna see much hockey tonight. Have to pick up Jenny-Cakes at the airport (who's coming home from Boston - she says there's Montreal fans everywhere you look).
Have a great day everyone.. Enjoy the website.

P.S. Anyone think Dave Nonis could be the new Leafs GM?

Hey Everyone..
Huge win by Calgary last night.. Down 3-0 just 4 minutes into the game. Cujo appearance! But the real change was Sarich's hit on Marleau - hope you all that one.. He just destroyed Marleau.. Full credit to Marleau for getting up & sticking around... I couldn't believe what I was seeing when he was standing in front of the bench wiping blood off his face when any normal person would've been being helped off the ice..
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=aIA5PDMb3WI
What the hell was Sean Avery thinking? Bum move by a bum player or just trying to get an edge?? Can't remember who said it, but one of the commentator's were calling it the chicken dance.. Too funny.
http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=QAt8T1roDcs
All three teams that had their first home game got much needed wins last night - Boston & Jersey especially else it was lights out. Game 2 of the Caps-Flyers was a let down for me personally.
Series' resuming tonight with the first home games for Ottawa, Nashville & Colorado. Let's see is Ottawa & Nashville can do what the Bruins & Devils did last night.

Hey everyone..
Surprising overtime game last night.. I didn't see the whole thing but looked like Boston had some fight. That clanger off the post @ the end of the 3rd was awesome.. Kovalev to me looks like a different player.. Don't remember him waiting & pawing with everyone at the end of the game getting off the ice.. He's definitely into it - good news for Hab fans. Boston wins tonight or they're done in four. Montreal's a scary team - go away please.
How about Dallas jumping all over Anaheim.. I'm loving THAT!
Calgary fans get their first home game tonight.. Flames can use any extra edge they can get b/c the Sharks had the best road record this year. Late start time - 10pm.
Game 2 of the Caps - Flyers series shortly on TSN.. Lets see what Ovie does for an encore.
Talk soon.

Hey everyone.
Hope you all had a chance to watch the 3rd period of the Philly-Washington game last night. Whoa - what a period that was. As my friends & family can attest, my man crush on Ovetchkin is well known. The dude's just plain crazy. Down 4-2 to Philly, Mike Green starts the comeback with 2 goals then Ovetckin finishes it off with the game winner.. Not only did he score a beauty (cause the turnover by stripping the d then outwaited Biron going left to right) but I think what I loved most was the hurt he put on Mike Richards @ the very end of the game. He just flattened him. Scrum ensues - the buzzer sounds - end of game & Ovetchkin skates away.. I think I was dumbfounded for a good 5-10 seconds staring at my screen. Then there's the topper - the commentators were talking during the game about how 20 or his goals this year have come in the last 10 minutes of a game.. That's 30% of his goals in the final 10 minutes of a game.. Talk about crunch time.
Senators lost a tough one last night.. Down 3-0, then tie it up only 5-3 with the go ahead goals in the last minute.. I think the Penguins will have they're hands full when they're in Canada for games 3 & 4.. What's the deal with Alfreddson - anyone think he'll show up on the bench anytime soon? Crosby - 4 assists.. whoa..
Attached is everyone's teams.. Please review & lemme know if I have any mistakes - I'm not perfect but I'm close (just kidding).. Apologies to everyone for getting this out later than I planned but work's been quite hectic lately. I will be sending another more complete version tomorrow.
60 entries this year - that's awesome! Thanks everyone..
Prizes breakdown:
- $650 for 1st
- $250 for 2nd
- $100 for 3rd
- $60 for 1st Round Leader
- $60 for 2nd Round Leader
- $60 for 3rd Round Leader
3 more games today & 4 tomorrow. Philly-Washington @ 2 tomorrow.. If you like hockey, you'll like that one..
Damn I love this time of year.

Good Morning everyone. Hope you all enjoyed last nights action..
Could last nights performances by the 2 Canadian teams be any different? Ottawa lays an egg & Calgary gets a monster win to start the playoffs.. How pissed off do you think Brian Murray & Eugene Melnyk were last night watching Gary Roberts show the Sens who's the boss *again*.
We have 58 entries this year which is up from last year - thanks everyone! There are some entries waiting to be picked up at one of my old watering hole's so I need to get those & add into the master list. Once I've got those & incorporate into the master list - I will be sending out daily statistical updates as I did in previous years.
San Jose, Anaheim, Montreal & Pittsburgh appear to be the most heavily picked teams - kinda of a no brainer.. Not sure if anyone remembers the pool I ran when Edmonton went to the finals.. In our collective genius - not one person picked an oiler!! But that's old news now. If Boston or Nashville decide to go on such a run this year it'll be déjà vu all over again!
Look for the next update to be sent on Sunday as that's the day I've dedicated to consolidating the master list. Payouts will be announced at that time as well. In addition and time permitting, I'll be posting daily updates to my website in addition to these email updates. My website is found @ www.patrickdunphy.net/hockeypool
Thanks again to everyone for joining.. Good luck to all!
